Work History:
I’ve only had one job since finishing my PhD which is the one I’m in. As part of my degree I worked for GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca. During school and university I had several jobs, including working in a supermarket, a petrol station, a fish factory and as a waiter in a restaurant.

Current Job:
Medicinal chemist developing medicines for malaria
-
About Me:
I’m a Scottish medicinal chemist who lives and works in Dundee, Scotland.

I live in not-so-sunny Dundee trying to discover medicines to treat malaria. When I’m not mixing chemicals together, I’m probably running or watching films. I love cooking and drink far too much coffee!

I work as a medicinal chemist, so most of my work is done in a lab. My job is an repeating cycle of designing molecules, making molecules and testing molecules. Each time, the compounds get a little bit better at treating the disease until eventually they become a real medicine!
Every day is different and I love trying new chemistry. Recently my reactions need either bright blue lights to make them work, or colourful balloons of very flammable gas. Thankfully, no fires…yet.
-
My Typical Day:
I get up early and go for a run before breakfast. Most of my working day is spent in a lab mixing things together.

My working day starts by going to the lab to check on the chemical reactions I put on the day before. If the results look good, I can isolate the compound and prepare it for testing against malaria parasites. If the results are not good, I put on more reactions!
I normally have meetings with other scientists so we can design more molecules to make, some of which may eventually become medicines.
