I work with lithium which catches fire in the air, so it must be handled in an argon atmosphere inside the box shown in the picture.
These are the samples I made inside the box. I try to be as tidy as possible!
This is where the samples end up. This experiment happened in England just before the pandemic started! It is a neutron experiment, where a neutron beam scans the sample to tell me where the atoms are.

My Typical Day:
I drive to the chemistry building. I have a desk at the office where I keep all my things such as laptop and notes. I grab my lab glasses and head to the lab. I carry out the experiments. I catch up with my friends for a bit. After my shift ends, I head back home.

7:30 am: I wake up, have breakfast and get dressed.
8:00 am : I drive to St Andrews.
8:30 am: I arrive at the Chemistry building.
8:45 am: I check my notebook to see what experiments I want to do.
9:00 am: I carry out the experiments.
11:00 am: Time to finish what I’m doing and tidy up.
11:30 am: Head home (it’s a short work day because of COVID).
12:00 pm: I have lunch.
13:00pm: Time to read and write about my work.
17:00pm: Finished for the day! I make dinner and watch Netflix with my family.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I will use the prize money to make a video about my work. The video will be sent to schools and will be available on YouTube.
